Can I claim a vasectomy on Medicare?

Dr Justin Low

Yes. You can claim a vasectomy on Medicare, which significantly reduces the out-of-pocket cost. At MSI Vasectomy clinics, the typical cost is around $590 after your Medicare rebate when the procedure is performed in a medical centre setting.

If your vasectomy is performed in a private day hospital, Medicare still applies, but out-of-pocket fees are higher because of hospital facility charges. With Medicare only (and no private health insurance), prices start from $760 for local anaesthetic (LA) or $825 for intravenous sedation (IV).

Medicare vs private cover

While Medicare provides a rebate that lowers the upfront cost, patients with private health insurance hospital cover often pay even less, sometimes with minimal or no gap. This is because MSI Vasectomy is accredited to process private health claims, making it one of the few providers in Australia able to offer this benefit.

If you don’t have private health insurance, Medicare is still a reliable option to claim back part of the procedure fee. Out-of-pocket costs vary by location (medical centre or private day hospital), but the Medicare rebate helps make getting a vasectomy more affordable and accessible.

Costs and rebate amounts are subject to change. Always confirm your eligibility, rebate, and out-of-pocket costs with MSI Vasectomy and Medicare before booking.
